Makers House
Kings Heath, Birmingham
Home to a creative family with a love of the arts and outdoors, this single storey wrap-around extension provides the homeowners with flexible and functional spaces that include large apertures, immersing the occupants in their Oudolf inspired garden.
Dark coloured bricks have been carefully selected with a nod to the old English name "brende' meaning 'burnt', as the area was once known. Both the dark brickwork and cedar shingles to the rear elevation form a contrast to the red brick of the existing building, which is further softened by planting in a glazed courtyard area.
Not only is contrast provided by the colour of the chosen materials but also in the shape of the building, with the sweeping curve of the dark brick wall that allows south-facing light to flood into spaces within.
Blend Architects was instructed to undertake RIBA Stage 1-4 services and the project is currently on-site and due for completion in winter 2023.
